Labour to contest 1986 elections
The Labour Party will field candidates for the Waimairi District Council at the next local body elections in 1986, says Mr Don Comber, the party’s regional council spokesman. “A full Labour team will be put forward to match the ‘blue squad’ in Waimairi,” he said.
The “blue squad” is a reference to the Coalition of Independents which Mr Comber said last week was a group of National Party stalwarts posing as independents. The coalition, which claims not to be a political party grouping, is fielding .nine candidates in
three ridings for the Saturday elections. Mr Comber said that claims by a coalition member and former National Party Cabinet Minister and member of Parliament for Papanui, Mr Bert Walker, that the Waimairi council had a Labour wing, were false.
“A search through Labour Party files has failed to show any record of Labour candidates standing for the Waimairi District Council,” Mr Comber said.
However, that would not be the case in three years as the party would enter into the race.
