A.N.Z.U.S. exercise

PA Wellington The New Zealand frigate Canterbury is sweeping the seas of the Indian Ocean in the vanguard of a naval task group taking part in the A.N.Z.U.S. exercise, Kangaroo 83, off the western coast of Australia. In company with the United States Navy frigate, Marvin Shields, the Canterbury is about 50 miles ahead of the main group, providing anti-submarine protection. In another section of the exercise an Army force is

being airlifted into the Pilbara region of north-west Australia. The force includes the 120-man rifle company of the New Zealand Army’s 2/1 Battalion, based at Burnham Military Camp. As the task group sails north it will face the threat of simulated attack by a submarine, two destroyers, patrol craft, and aircraft. The aircraft include two Royal New Zealand Air Force Andovers of No. 1 Squadron, which have been carrying out maritime reconnaissance patrols.
