Pitchers to duel

Two of Canterbury’s leading pitchers, Chubb Tangaroa (Noel Leeming Burnside) and David Bradbury (Imperial Merivale), should have an interesting duel when the senior A club softball season begins at Papanui Domain today. The competition will begin with a full round of double-headers for the men while two of the women’s teams will play twice this afternoon. Merivale is making its debut in the top grade with Bradbury its pitchercoach. The team will play Burnside, the reigning champion, in the 12 noon game and Richmond at 3.30 p.m. The Burnside side, spearheaded by its New Zealand representatives, Tangaroa (pitcher), Jimmy Hall

(short-stop), and Graeme Anderson (first base), will again be the team to topple this season. The other men’s game on the skin diamond will feature Clarity Press Papanui and A.G.C. Finance United at 3.30 p.m; These teams had some great battles last year, though United is down on pitching strength now. In the women’s competition the top seed, Albion, sponsored by Robert Brown Real Estate, will have only one outing. It will meet Ascot Woolston in a 1.45 p.m. game. The other leading women’s team of recent seasons, General Lee Burnside, will meet United in the late game and should also have little trouble notching up two points.
