Australia wins golf

NZPA Melbourne Australia comfortably beat New Zealand in the sixteenth Sloane Morpeth amateur golf trophy in Melbourne yesterday. The Australians won nine games to three, bringing their tally of victories in the event to eight. New Zealand has won the trophy five times with the other three contests tied.

Australia began yesterday’s second round with a four-game lead, which it retained through the morning foursomes. The Australian pair, Eric Couper and Peter Sweeney, defeated Michael Barltrop and Colin Taylor, two-up. In the other foursomes, Terry Cochrane and James turned the tables with

a 2-1 victory over Australians, Wayne Smith and Chris Tatt. Later in the day Colin Taylor (N.Z.) defeated the Australian amateur champion, Eric Couper, 2-1, but Tatt, Sweeney and Smith won the other three singles to give their country an easy win..

In the Claire Higson Trophy for golfers 26 years and under, Australia fought back to win by three games. It had trailed by one after the first day’s play, but yesterday Garry Radka was the only New Zealander to win again. He beat the Queensland amateur champion, Peter Wuoti, 3-2, while the home team won both foursomes matches and the three other singles to win. 4*6. -!< -•
