League transfer ban lifted
PA Auckland • Australia and England have joined New Zealand in permitting the international transfer of rugby league players between leagues. The agreement was reached last evening at a meeting of the International Rugby League Board in Auckland. England and Australia agreed to lift the 1977 ban on international transfers, a ban extended at the 1981 meeting. The lifting of the ban will be under the same conditions as those imposed by the New Zealand Rugby League. Conditions will be that the two international leagues agree voluntarily to a negotiating fee being paid. The 1.R.L.8. confirmed that:—
® No player shall depart from his domestic league before he has been granted the mandatory clearance and the player to produce this clearance before registering with his new league;
© No clearance to be given until the negotiating fee has been paid in full; • To compensate for any permanent loss of service of a player through injury, the domestic league to be indemnified to a maximum of £30,000. ® The date of release of a player to be agreed to by the two international leagues. It was confirmed that Britain will tour New Zealand in 1984, New Zealand will tour Britain and France in 1985, Australia will visit Britain and France in 1986 and France will tour the Southern Hemisphere in 1987.
France hopes to have a special tour to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary in April, 1984, but arrangements and details have yet to be made known. Australia, which will celebrate its bi-centenary in 1988, plans to have a special tournament, but details have yet to be worked out.
