‘Chuck them in’

PA Whangarei The only sure cure for stopping young children from going near swimming pools unattended is to “chuck them in,” according to a Hokianga County councillor, Mr Joe Williams. “When you pull them out they will not go near it again,” he told a council meeting. He pointed to marae experience as the basis for his child-training philosophy.

“A lot of maraes are

beside creeks. When young children go there you just push them in. They soon go screaming to mun and dad and do not come back,” he said.

The council was considering a letter from the Northland Health Services advisory committee giving support to efforts to have local authorities adopt a bylaw requiring the fencing of private swimming pools.

The council received the correspondence without taking any action.
