Labour plans regional tour
PA Wellington The Labour Party will try to woo provincial voters during a seven-week tour of regional areas by its leader, Mr Lange. The “campaign for the regions” tour will take Mr Lange to 22 centres from Invercargill to Whangarei. Mr Lange told a postcaucus press conference that he was undertaking the trip because he believed regional votes were essential if Labour was to become the government.
“I believe the next election will be won when those seats where we need to get a 4 per cent swing to oust
the Government become ours,” he said. “Those electorates are important to us.' They are where we become the government.” He would take a message of commitment to the values which people in the regions espoused in their community, civic, and family life. He would talk about basic issues such as jobs, regional development, agricultural investment, and transport. “We are going to make a commitment to people who are vital to us, not just because they generate a lot of our export wealth but because we have to get their votes,” he said.
