Lebanon shelling
Sir,—Susan Taylor’s letter of September 24 attempts to draw a comparison between the United States protection of its marine peace-keeping force in Lebanon and the Soviet downing of the Korean airliner. Surely no person in his right mind could consider that two such vastly different situations have any parallel. The United States Marines have every right to defend themselves from attack, as do the French and Italians. Ms Taylor fails to mention that the French have launched repeated air attacks on gun emplacements threatening French lives and I am sure that if the Soviets had a contingent in the peacekeeping force they would move swiftly against any threat to their safety. The Americans have displayed commendable, indeed foolhardy, restraint up to now, and one can only hope that if they once again come under direct fire they will take a much more positive stance. — Yours, etc., BRENT CAIN. September 26, 1983.
