Milford Road cut off

PA Te Anau A start was made yesterday on clearing the Milford Sound Road which was closed on Wednesday morning after several avalanches crossed it, cutting it in several places on both sides of the Homer Tunnel.

A gang of four Ministry of Works and Development staff using heavy machinery managed to cut tracks through the debris on the Te Anau side of the tunnel, where they were faced with two big slips about 100 metres long and two smaller ones.

According to Mr R. A. Andrew, construction supervisor for the Ministry at Te Anau, the slips on the Milford side of the tunnel are worse than those experienced in 1980. The initial slip encountered there was more than 12 metres deep. Work will continue today, weather permitting..
