Tasman fares to be cut

LES BLOXHAM,

travel editor Auckland

Travellers planning holidays in Australia during October or November will receive good news from Air New Zealand and Qantas in the next day or so. According to informed sources, the airlines are about to announce the biggest conditional fare cuts yet on all of their Tasman routes.

The present lowest fare of $524 for return flights from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch to Sydney will be cut $125 to $399.

Similar savings will cut the round-trip fares to $449 to Brisbane and to $499 to Melbourne. The fare cuts will also apply on the airlines’ services to Hobart, Perth, Adelaide, Townsville, and Darwin.

However, it is believed that the new low fares will be subject to special conditions.

They will, for instance, be available only for bookings seven days before beginning travel. Another requirement will be that passengers must stay in Australia for at least 10 days. Both airlines apparently see a need for the new promotional fares to help stimulate travel in the traditionally slack preChristmas months. An Air New Zealand spokesman confirmed yesterday that an announcement about Tasman fares was “imminent."
