U.S. ski-racers return
The United States Ski Association is sparing no expense in its bid for Olympic gold medals next year. Its women’s team, which trained and raced at Mount Hutt only in August, will return to New Zealand this week-end.
While the minds of Christchurch sports fans will be fixed firmly on the Ranfurly Shield challenge against Auckland, a big 33-member ski team of racers, trainers
and coaches will arrive in the city tomorrow. Among the team members will again be some of the world’s top ski-racers, including the over-all World Cup champion, Tamara McKinney, the triple 1982 world championship medallist, Christin Cooper, and the veteran downhiller, Cindy Nelson.
Mr Peter Yeoman, the chairman of the Mount Hutt Ski Company, said yester-
day that the arrival of the team was the outcome of several weeks of negotiations by the U.S.S.A. with its American sponsors and Mount Hutt.
Two trainers have been at Mount Hutt for three days preparing for the monthlong training camp and assessing snow conditions.
The American women will train early in the morning, starting as soon as the lifts are operating.
