Minister criticises teacher unions

Parliamentary reporter Teacher unions were criticised yesterday by the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, for their “dishonest” response to the reduction of teachers’ college intake quotas. Mr Wellington said that six months ago the unions accused the Government of supplying a teacher surplus, but now they predicted an undersupply. He was responding to criticism of the quota reductions by the teacher unions, who said the reductions could lead to teacher shortages. The primary teachers’ union, the New Zealand Educational Institute, was singled out by Mr Wellington.

“As late as mid-February this year the N.Z.E.I. was claiming that there were 1500 unemployed teachers whom the Government should find jobs for,” he said.

“I am convinced that the N.Z.E.I. is opposed to every Government decision relating to education, irrespective of what that decision is.”

Mr Wellington said that there would be many teachers who welcomed the Government’s careful planning of teacher trainee numbers.
