News format to change
National and international news will be given a larger share of the 6.30 news from Monday. TVNZ’s editor of news, Mr Graeme Wilson, said that the national network news would be extended to half an hour, from 6.30 to 7 p.m. Background items, which have been shown in the “Nationwide” segment, will be carried within the network news, and the separate “Nationwide” segment will be discontinued.
“The change will allow wider coverage and will mean that major national and international stories can be treated in more depth,” Mr Wilson said. f 'lnstead of separating news items from the background information that gives them context, the extended coverage which has been a successful feature of ‘Nationwide’ will be incor-
porated into the main news bulletin.
“In addition sports news will be played in its own short segment at 7 p.m. after the Network News. The net result will mean up to 10 more minutes a night for national news coverage. The duration of the regional programmes will not change.” Mr Wilson also announced that “Te Karere,” the daily news in Maori on TV2, was being extended by an extra minute to five minutes a day. » “The programme was proving very popular with its target audience and there was a strong demand for the additional time,” Mr Wilson said.
