Auckland forwards too powerful

PA Masterton Forward power paved the way for Auckland’s 34-7 win over Wairarapa-Bush in a national first division rugby match at Memorial Park, Masterton, yesterday. The heavier and taller Auckland pack won a wealth of possession from line-outs, rucks, and mauls, and was responsible for five of the team’s six tries. Had Auckland’s . backs made anything like the most of their scoring opportunities, its winning margin would have been greater.

Auckland played into a

strong wind in the first half and led 16-7 at the end of it. Wairarapa-Bush raised the hopes of its supporters, when it lead 7-nil after five minutes. But it could not win enough good ball to sustain the effort. It did however, finish the game strongly, keeping Auckland scoreless for the last twenty minutes. Scorers: Auckland 34 (John Kirwan 3, John Collinson, Allan Whetton and Tim Burcher, tries; Grant Fox 5 conversions). Wairarapa-Bush 7 (Graeme Anderson try, Mark Benton, dropped goal).
