Last-minute try secures victory

PA Hamilton Waikato hit back strongly in the last few minutes for a 12-9 win in yesterday’s national championship rugby match against Wellington at Hamil- ton. One of Waikato’s best forwards of the day, the flanker, Wayne Bullot, scored the only try of the match for the winning points, after the ball was reversed to him from a backline move after a scrum.

Wellington seemed to be heading towards victory when Waikato, playing with the wind in the first half,

could not manage more than a 6-3 lead.

However, Waikato’s stout defence, coupled with Wellington’s tendency to kick chances away, prevented the visitors from establishing an advantage of more than 9-6, where the score stayed for just over quarter of an hour until Waikato’s winning burst. Scorers:

Waikato 12 (W. Bullot try, T. Purcell conversion and dropped goal, J. Boe dropped goal.) Wellington 9 (N. Sorensen 3 penalties).
