Heavy seas slow oil rig tow

PA Invercargill The resumption of drilling for oil in the Great South Basin has been delayed for about three weeks because bad weather has hampered the voyage of the Penrod 78 rig from Japan. The large semi-submers-ible rig left Osaka, Japan, on August 7 under tow by the 22,000 h.p. ocean-going tug Deyue, run by the China Towing Company.

Since leaving Japan the rig and its sole minder have

encountered bad weather and heavy seas — five typhoons in the last 17 days. Late last week the towing was temporarily halted after the tug’s towing cable was damaged in a storm. Towing began again on Sunday.

At the last report, early this week, it was thought the rig was situated northeast of the Mariana Islands, which lie midway between Japan and Papua New Guinea.
