Court design plans soon

Design plans for Christchurch’s new court block will be drawn up immediately. The president of the Canterbury District Law Society, Mr C. E. W. Averill, announced yesterday that the Cabinet Works Committee had approved the preparation of the drawings. He said that he expected the Government to call for tenders for the construction contract when the plans had been completed. The building’s foundations are due to be finished within a year. Mr Averill said he was "delighted” at the progress. Mr Averill, who last week

criticised the Government for reportedly “mothballing” the development, interpreted the decision as evidence that it had accepted “the urgency of the situation.” Not only would the facilities now be provided “very soon,” he said, but the letting of the construction contract would create employment opportunities for the local building industry to the widespread benefit of the community. Mr Averill said that news of the approval had been relayed to him by the member of Parliament for Fendalton, Mr P. R. Burdon.
