Travolta dead

PA Palmerston North Fairdale Stud’s newest stallion, Travolta, has died, the victim of a mystery blood disease. Travolta was on the verge of his second breeding season. The French-bred five year old was landed at Fairdale, near Palmerston North, in May last year at a cost of $500,000. Rex Fell, whose family owns Fairdale, said the stallion died of a rare and as-y’et-unidentified blood disease. An autopsy will be done. Travolta had a book of quality mares for his first season last year. Sixty-eight of them are in foal. Seventy mares were booked to him for the breeding season about to start. His fee was $4OOO. No arrangements had been made to transfer Travolta’s bookings, but Fairdale is exploring the possibility of obtaining a replacement from either New Zealand or Australia, Mr Fell said. It is the second time in just over a decade that a stallion’s death has created an emergency for Fairdale. In 1972 the stud’s brilliant progenitor, Pakistan 11, died just before the breeding season.
