Van der Hum amiss
PA Hamilton Van der Hum, winner of the 1976 Melbourne Cup and one of the most versatile gallopers in recent years, may have run his last race. His part owner, Roy Robinson, said that Van der Hum had developed filling in a foreleg after finishing sixth in last week’s Grand National Hurdles at fliccarton. The Robinson family had been planning to retire Van
der Hum after he contested the Waikato Hunt Cup on September 27 at Te Rapa, the scene of many of his successes. However, it seems probable that Van der Hum may have already run his final race.
While the 12-year-old is displaying no sign of soreness, there has been some filling in the leg all winter, according to Robinson, and it was apparently more evident after the Riccarton
event, probably because of the firmer going. No chances will be taken with the gelding and he has been given an easy time since returning from Riccarton on Sunday. Van der Hum won 17 races in a career spanning eight years. He won over distances from 1600 m to 3200 m on the flat and then in later years became an accomplished jumper with wins in both hurdle and steeplechase events.
