Shunters resume normal work

Shunting-yard railway workers in Canterbury have resumed normal work after a week of action which caused some delays to freight trains. About 80 workers began taking one hour off work for each hour on from midnight on August 7, on the ground that they were being exposed to excessive noise from their work. They were also adopting a different technique for shunting, which caused further delays. The secretary A of the Christchurch branch of the

National Union of Railwaymen, Mr P. S. Corliss, said that the Railways Corporation had agreed to resolve the noise problem by altering shift times so that staff were not exposed to loud noises for long periods. An industrial officer would visit Christchurch on September 1 to discuss the problem.

Members of the branch will attend a stop-work meeting this morning to hear a report from union officials on .the implications of recent announcements about staff cuts.
