State house for ‘kids’
Christchurch’s “street kids” will, soon have a State house. The Housing Corporation has bought a five-bedroom house in the inner city which it is about to hand over to the Anglican City Mission and Catholic Social Services. The City Missioner, the Rev. David Morrell; said
that the house would accommodate seven “kids” with one of the bedrooms reserved for the supervising “parents.” Supervisors had yet to be found, he said, but when they were the house would be occupied. Mr Morrell said that there would be no problem finding enough “kids” to live in it.
“We know that they are there. It is just a matter of selection,” ,he said. Negotiations were continuing between the two church agencies and the Social Welfare Department regarding funding and administration. Mr Morrell said that an inner city site was essential. Unless the house was within walking distance from the centre of town it would be useless.
The corporation has repaired the house, renovated it, extended the kitchen and brought the toilet indoors.
