Arts careers difficult
A lack of a career structure was the main problem in the arts, said the director of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, Dr Michael Volkerling, yesterday. The limiting funding available made guaranteed work for artists and arts administrators impossible, he said. “The wage structure is such that people have to
leave the industry often. The minimum Actors’ Equity wage is between $9OOO and $lO,OOO a year and you can stay on the minimum for 10 years.” Although administrators were not governed by the Equity award, their wages tended to reflect those of the performers in the particular organisation. There was a high turn-
over of personnel in performance and administration.
Arts administration in New Zealand was an area requiring development said Dr Volkerling.
New Zealand arts centre directors would meet their Australian counterparts in the next few months to establish a closer link between the countries.-
