Rock blamed for trawler sinking
PA Auckland A concrete trawler which sank off Little Barrier Island yesterday apparently was holed by a large rock that had caught in the net, a man rescued from the vessel said last evening.. Mr Walter Shadgett, of Henderson, one of two men on board the 17.6-metre concrete trawler Bay Fisher, said that the rock had crashed against the side of the vessel several times. “We didn’t realise what the damage was under the water,” he said. "That’s when the bells started ringing and all hell : -4 f ■ ■ ■ • , v
broke loose. We tried to get the pumps going ... I was starting to get wet toes so it was time to do something serious." Mr Shadgett and Mr Tony Ranginiu, of Auckland, were forced to abandon the boat about 11km north-west of Little Barrier Island. They were rescued from their liferaft about 11.20 a.m. by the crew of the Leigh-based trawler Pulsar, which had been fishing about 12km from the Bay Fisher. The Bay Fisher, owned by Apellor Fisheries, Auckland, sank minutes after the Pulsar arrived.
