Armed man raids P.O.
PA Auckland An armed man last evening burst into the St Lukes Post Office, in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert, hit a man over the head with a sawn-off shot-gun and threatened to kill the staff and customers. The man then fled into crowds of shoppers with a plastic bag which he had told a teller to fill with money. A man who tackled the robber was hit over the head with the gun. The man, believed to be in his 50s, was not seriously injured, although he was still in Auckland Hospital late last evening.
The police believe that a large amount of money was stolen. Detective Inspector G. F. Hugglestone said that the robber had approached a female teller, aged 23, about 7.55 p.m. The man, who said that he was armed, ordered her to fill a plastic bag with money. She started filling the bag with money from her till. The robber then ordered her to get more money from other tills. Mr Hugglestone said that as the robber was leaving he threatened to kill the people in the post office. About five customers and seven tellers were in the post office at the time.
