Kaiapoi bowler performs well

The Kaiapoi lawn bowler, Travis Coup, recently returned from another rewarding visit to the annual winter tournament on Queensland’s Gold Coast. In a field of 1056, Coup was one of the last two New Zealanders in the singles. A 25-18 win over the Australian international, Keith Poole, took him into the last 32, but he was beaten, 25-15, by the other surviving New Zealander, Peter Beiliss, in the next round. Beiliss, in turn, lost his next game to a local player, lan Schubeck, who was beaten in the final by another Gold Coast player, Bob Purcell. No New Zealand team lasted long in the pairs, but in the fours, for which the

entry was 512, Coup’s team of Jim Gillespie (Timaru), Murray King (Woolston W.M.C.) and Jack Edmonds (St Albans) outlasted any of the other full New Zealand combinations. They reached the last 16. The fours was won by a composite team skipped by Peter Lawson, of Tasmania, and Beiliss was the No. 3 in this team. As part of the opening ceremony, some women’s games were played and, at the last minute, a New Zealand four was put together. It included the Yates sisters, Helen and Edna, of Linwood, and Cleo Smith, of Burnside. The four was beaten, but not by much. In fact, it gave a very good account of itself.
