Sir, Sexual discrimination is . also entrenched in New Zealand athletics. As a matter of course, women are denied the opportunity to . compete on the track over the popular 5000 m and 10,000 m events. In crosscountry events women are often only offered 3-6 km races, whereas men compete over twice these distances. Competing in the Canterbury cross-country and road championships, women race over 6 and Bkm. The men’s races are twice these distances. Clearly many women want to compete over longer distances. The 9.Bkm Governors Bay to Lyttelton road race on August 13 attracted 130 entries from women. In the City of Christchurch marathon and half marathon there were nearly 700 women competing. This form of sexual discrimination should be eliminated promptly, and women given the opportunity to compete over the same distances as men on track, road and cross-country. Perhaps an appeal to the Human Rights Commission would be ap- - propriate. Yours etc., Eric Jackson.
