Red Cross aid for Sri Lankans
PA Wellington The New Zealand Red Cross Society has given $2OOO to the Sir Lankan Red Cross to help thousands of Sri Lankans affected by continuing civil disturbances.
The money was given in response to an appeal by the League of Red Cross Societies in Geneva, said the New Zealand society’s president, Mr John Wilson. He said the Sri Lankan Red Cross reported that about 104,000 displaced
people were living in 18 temporary camps. Damage to homes, shops, and other properties was enormous because of extensive arson and looting. The New Zealand Save the Children Fund said more than 20,000 children were homeless in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, after communal violence between Tamils and Sinhalese.
Field workers in Sri Lanka estimated that the homeless could total 100,000.
