$40,000 fire damage

A fire possibly caused by a spark from an open fire caused an estimated $40,000 worth of damage to a building, used to produce wool for home spinners, on Benmore station near Springfield yesterday afternoon. Mr Roger James, the station owner, said that the fire started not long after his wife, who runs the spin-ning-wool business, had left the building for the day. Part of the building, which was about 80 per cent damaged, was used as shearers’ quarters. Mr James said that the spinning-wool business, a lot of which was done by mail order, would be back in business in some form again today. The property was fully insured. Firemen from the Springfield and Sheffield volunteer brigades had to use breathing apparatus to bring the fire under control.
