Emblem use an offence

PA Wellington Concern at the use of the Red Cross emblem on a launch protesting at the arrival in Auckland of the nuclear-powered cruiser U.S.S. Texas was expressed yesterday by the secretarygeneral of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, Mr Jerry Talbot. “It is of paramount importance that the use of the Red Cross emblem is not abused,” he said. “It signifies total impartiality and offers protection to those personnel engaged in humanitarian work.” He said the use of the emblem was prescribed under the Geneva Convention, and the society wished to draw to the attention of persons who might contemplate using it under such circumstances that it was an offence, and rendered them liable to prosecution.
