Hunger strike ends
Two prisoners who. refused to take food for about 10 days at Paparua Prison have resumed eating. “I suppose they just got hungry,” the prison superintendent, Mr Humphrey Stroud, said last evening. “They have been munching away since yesterday.” Mr Stroud said that the prison authorities had taken no notice of the men’s action and had made no concessions to them.
One of the men, Alistair John Barr, aged 31, stopped
eating after he was transferred from the Invercargill remand centre to Paparua, on July 20. He was complaining, among other things, about the prison authorities’ refusal to let his sister visit him. The other man who had been refusing to eat is Larry Thomas Geeson, aged 25, who is charged with five others with murder and attempted murder in connection with a gang shooting in Christchurch.
