Selection of M.P.s
Sir,—ln regard to the forthcoming selection for John Kirk’s successor by the Labour Party, your correspondent, J. E. Garvey (July 22) writing in support of the party president, Mr Anderton, said that, if successful, Mr Anderton could open a manufacturing branch of his business in the South Island — which could be an added attraction to Mr Anderton’s candidature’s success. Mr Garvey used the word “could.” Well, I happen to know that one of the other nominees, namely Mollie Clark, by her own personal efforts, has during the past 14 years or sfi, persuaded several firms from the North Island to set up branches
in Christchurch, in point of fact in Sydenham. My firm is one that is pleased that it was encouraged to venture south. Actions speak louder than words, and I do not think a local person with such a proven track record should be overlooked. — Yours, etc., J. P. STEWART. July 30, 1983.
