Rangong put down

PA Wellington Rangong, the sire of the 1979 Melbourne Cup winner, Hyperno, and the champion galloper, Ring the Bell, was humanely put down at the

Balcarres Stud near Matamata on Friday after suffering for some time from cancer.

The French-bred sire, aged 18, by Right Royal V from Crepina, was imported by Mr Jack Lindsay in 1971 and sired a host of winners in New Zealand and Australia.

Hyperno came from his first crop and he later sired Ring the Bell and the good Australian gallopers, Forward Charge, Bianco Lady, Fashion Beau, Evening Mist and Pigalle.
