Mitch Shirra third

NZPA-Reuter Manchester New Zealand’s Mitch Shirra was edged out of second place in the overseas final of the world individual speedway championship in a run-off by Britain’s Kenny Carter at Belle Vue yesterday. Shirra finished only a point behind the winner, Britain’s Phil Collins, who gained with 12 points out of a maximum 15. Shirra’s compatriot, Larry Ross, also qualified for next month’s intercontinental final, by finishing fourth equal with Billy Sanders, of Australia.

The qualifiers will join Hans Neilsen, Ole Olsen, Erik Gunderson (Denmark),

Jan Andersson, Pierre Brannefors (Sweden) and Peter Ravn (Norway) in the intercontinental final in London on August 7.
