Australian banks
Sir,—What a superb new red herring Mr Muldoon has found: to put up the idea of closing one of the Australian banks and then to knock it down again. From what is he trying to distract our attention? One possibility is the C.E.R. agreement, signed with such a flourish, which now proves to have severe flaws on the financial side. Or is it his weakness over the nuclear issue? While President Reagan leads the world to yet higher achievements in nuclear weaponry, our Government behaves like a bunch of nuclear lemmings and remains silent. When France tests another weapon, our P.M. reports that he has been told when they plan to stop. And when is that? When they are good and ready. Charles Atlas’s 7-stone weakling did not demonstrate his spirit by reporting that the bully had told him when he planned to stop kicking sand in his face.—Yours, etc., R. HARMAN. July 6, 1983.
