Opossums in chimney
Sir,—R. M. Grant (July 5) misses the point of C. Bryant’s letter. Jim Baggstrom is a ranger and as such is duty bound to uphold the law. In this case he flouted it amid a wave of publicity, and the public have the right to ask why. The Avian welfare group has collected a considerable amount of money from the public and as a consequence is now to be held accountable for its use. Several others in the region do just as much work as this group but for some odd reason newspaper photographers are not tied to their shirt tails. Any true conservationist knows that the release of opossums as was done here, will, in the long run, result in the denuding of trees and as a consequence threaten the existence of the bird life. No body or group is above the law.—Yours, etc MAXWELL GILMORE. July 5, 1983.
