In 1979, Yefim Tankhilevich and his family left Minsk, in the Soviet Union, to “try to find some more
freedom.” Last evening, during a ceremony at the Christchurch Civic Offices, they became New Zealand citizens. Mr - Tankhilevicb, aged 45, is a civil engineer who works for a local firm of consulting engineers. He is Jewish, and was able to leave the Soviet Union on a visa for Israel during “a period when it was a bit easier for Jewish people to leave.” During six months in Rome, helped by a refugee support group who assisted in getting emigration papers, Mr Tankhilevicb
