More solo parents—census

PA Wellington An increasing number of childless couples and a sharp rise in families with only one parent were two trends which emerged from the 1981 census on family composition, said the Statistics Department yesterday. The number of solo-par-ent families increased faster than any other household type, with a rise of 15,194 or 31.7 per cent on

the 1976 census, and the number of childless couples increased 10.4 per cent to 19,512. The proportion of households made up of one or two persons only had increased to 48 per cent, a rise of 76,325 since 1976, the department said. There were also now fewer children per family and a decline in two-parent families since 1976.
