No post for woman

Sir,—A case of sexual discrimination has come to my attention lately which highlights to what extremes some companies will go in preventing women achieving managerial positions. The said woman, having worked her way up through the company ladder in her many years employment, finds the position to which she aspired, that of office manager, no longer exists. Recently a senior staff member was promoted through transfer and the Christchurch staff were to be promoted accordingly. When it came to this woman however she found her chances ’of promotion blocked, because the office managerial duties had been dispersed among the other senior staff. Her promotion was blocked because she was a woman, although she had temporarily worked at this job when other staff were absent. Is it any wonder that women never achieve equal pay when some firms circumvent the legislation by such devious measures?—Yours, etc.,

J. W. STRANGE. July 3, 1983.
