Morning music
Sir,—Readers who listen .to early morning music on the National programme will have noticed that there has been a change in the programme. Instead of pleasant middle-of-the-road music with the occasional snippet of light classical, we now get music (?) similar to pop music which can be heard from so many commercial stations. This society was formed to look at this problem and some future projects. A letter of complaint to Radio New Zealand brought a reply which said that this was not pop but contemporary music, and that it was not policy to bow to pressure groups. Members made surveys throughout the Wellington area and found that a large percentage of those who listened to the early morning National programme disliked it. A similar number of surveys have been made in the Christchurch area. Over 90 per cent want a return to the former type of music. They want real singers, not pop stars with
echo trying to improve their meagre talents.—Yours, etc., R. M. JONES, Honorary Secretary, Society for the Improvement of Broadcasting. June 27, 1983.
