Australian market in retreat
Australian share prices declined as investors reacted to lower metal prices, and the weakness of Wall Street, brought on by fears of higher interest rates. The all-ordinaries index was 6.3 points off at 604.2, with the all-resources 10.2 points lower at 492.1, and the all-industrials 1.3 points down at 743.1. Major falls were MIM 19c to 435 c, BHP 18c to 820 c, CRA 16c to 530 c, WMC 12c to 448, and Renison 10c to 425, while North Broken Hill 285 c, Bougainville 270 c, and ERA 135 c fell sc. Lower gold prices caused GMK to fall 20c to 990 c, as did Emperor to 290 c. Peko fell 4c to 716 c, and Central Norseman 8c to 792 c.
