Sour end to band’s fund-raising
PA New Plymouth Telethon turned sour for six New Plymouth and Waitara bands on Saturdaynight when police put an early end to their fundraising concert in New Plymouth because of unruly behaviour and the presence of alcohol. While band members admitted that they knew liquor and been taken into the community centre where the dance was being held, they said no-one was drunk and the 150 young people attending were well behaved.
They said they were given just five minutes to pack up equipment which had taken most of the day to set up, and were never given a reason for the abrupt ending. A police spokesman said the nance was closed because the Y.M.C.A. organisers were concerned about the presence of alcohol and the unruly behaviour of many of those attending, aged between 14 and 20. He said the reasons for closing were given to the band in charge of the evening.
