Alcan, Alex Harvey in joint venture
PA Auckland Alcan New Zealand and Alex Harvey Industries will combine in the manufacture and marketing of metal roof tiles in Australia. The wholly owned Alcan subsidiary. Gerard Roofing Systems. N.Z., and A.H.I. will establish a 50-50 joint venture which will run the Melbourne-based marketing company, A.H.I. Roofing Australia, and the Sydneybased manufacturing' company, Rolls-Gerard Tile Company (Aust)., Pty, Ltd. The capital structure of
the join venture has not yet been disclosed. The joint venture will make the brand name metal tiles of both partners and market these, together with imports from New Zealand. The move is seen as a big step towards strengthening the position of New Zealand tile manufacturers in the Australian market and is. at least in part, a consequence of recent difficulties with Australian customs regarding the imposition of duties on roofing tile exports from New Zealand.
