Research on flu
“8.8. C. Science Magazine” (Concert programme, 7.30 tonight) will look at the steps that have been made towards the conquest of flu. The flu virus moves between cells and finally enters them by means of molecules called glycoproteins on the surface of the virus membrane. One of these glycoproteins — neuraminidase — has just been mapped by a team in Australia. The second glycoprotein — haemaglutinin — was mapped a couple of years ago at the World Influenza Centre. This de-
tailed knowledge of glycoproteins has implications for the prevention and treatment of flu. The programme will also look at acid in mists and fog, ozone harm to trees, and meteorites from Mars. N.Z. economy “Economic Survey” (Concert programme, 9 p.m.) is a two-monthly commentary on aspects of the New Zealand economy. The speaker tonight will be Mr R. A. Buckle, lecturer in economics at Victoria University, Wellington.
