Charlton Heston as Michelangelo
Charlton Heston stars in today’s midday movie on Two, “The Agony and the Ecstasy” (1965). Based on Irving Stone’s best-selling novel about the life of Michelangelo, the film begins with a brief look at the artist’s major works before concentrating on Michelangelo’s creative conflicts with Pope Julius 11. Produced and directed by Carol Reed (“The Third Man,” “Oliver!”), the film also stars Rex Harrison, Diane Cilento, Harry Andrews and
Adolfo Celi. Heston has portrayed larger-than-life heroes in historical epics since 1959 when he won an Academy Award for the lead role in “Ben Hur.” Apart from Michelangelo, Charlton Heston has portrayed Moses, and Cardinal Richelieu — twice. Heston has served six terms as president of the Screen Actors’ Guild and is chairman of the American Film Institute. He is also the author of “The Actor’s Life: Journals 1956-1976.”
