Education system

Sir, — So at last our Minister of Education has publicly admitted the existence of “fads” in the education system (Press Conference TV 1 Sunday night). In particular, he cited “new maths” which was imported by our Department of Education from the United States — the same “new maths” which still manages to confuse teachers, pupils and parents. In the same programme, the Minister was naive enough to suggest that this department should grade all teachers. Before Mr Wellington proceeds with implementing any new policy regarding teacher effectiveness he would be well-advised to reflect on who is best fitted for this task. Obviously the authors of the current shambles which has been inflicted on teachers are the least suited. — Yours, etc., JOHN LEVERSEDGE. June 13, 1983.
