Stranded teachers
Sir, — The Canterbury Education Board has *quite properly drawn attention (p the plight of
those stranded by Cook Strait weather. All travellers, not only teachers, are affected and some, especially those in the private sector, could show a much greater loss than a day’s pay. Rather than have the taxpayer meet the teachers’ losses, would it not be preferable for an arm of the Accident Compensation Corporation or a specially constituted quango to levy all Cook Strait travellers and pay out just claims on those travellers losing financially through bad weather stoppages. The exercise of filling in a complicated 15-page claim form in Picton or Wellington while waiting for transport may be preferable to listening to weather forecasts. — Yours, etc.,
PETER HILL. June 13, 1983.
