Population and resources

Sir, — Some recent correspondence has focused on the major issue of population and resources. American preparations for World War 111 are intimately connected with this issue. In the 1960 s the United States consumed about 40 per cent of the world’s production of natural resources and 34 per cent of the world’s energy production. Most significantly, American dependence on foreign sources of raw materials has steadily increased over the years. In 1974, for instance, America imported more than 50 per cent of its strontium, columbium, cobalt, manganese, titanium, chromium, aluminium, nickel, zinc, etc. By the year 2000 it might have to import most of its supply of all but one of the 13 basic materials required by an industrial economy. To fight future resource wars American strategists have devised a limited nuclear war theory and a policy of genocide for the Third World. A new social Darwinism has emerged. — Yours, etc.,
