The Royal Navy’s newest aircraft-carrier. H.M.S. Illustrious, is dwarfed by the Soviet Navy’s newest carrier, the 42,000-ton Novorossiisk, off Cape Finnesterre in the Atlantic. The Illustrious, which displaces 19,000 tons and carries Sea Harrier jump-jet fighter-bombers, and helicopters, was taking part in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation manoeuvres. She was commissioned last year. The Novorossiisk, the third of a new class of Soviet aircraft-carrier, was also commissioned last year. She carries surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, Yakovlev 36 jump-jets, and Kamov anti-submarine helicopters.
