The championship leader, Alain Prost, came fifth in , his Renault and the two points gained kept him at the top of the standings. He now heads, Tambay and the, Brazilian, Nelson Piquet, by three points, with Rosberg fourth a further forte this moved

from ninth to fifth. The start was delayed 40 minutes because of a power failure. Arnoux led for all but four laps following a pit stop for fuel and tyres on the 35th lap.
