Arnoux wins Canadian G.P.

than ten seconds behind Cheever with the world champion, Keke Rosberg, a determined fourth in his Williams, the first of the underpowered non-turbb-charged cars. The championship leader, Alain Prost, came fifth in , his Renault and the two points gained kept him at the top of the standings. He now heads, Tambay and the, Brazilian, Nelson Piquet, by three points, with Rosberg fourth a further forte this moved
from ninth to fifth. The start was delayed 40 minutes because of a power failure. Arnoux led for all but four laps following a pit stop for fuel and tyres on the 35th lap. He said his car ran perfectly. Before the race Arnoux said his pole position would be an advantage because the Montreal course is “not easy to drive — passing is difficult.” Cheever said his car ran well for the first 40 laps then be experienced a prob- ’ lem with fifth gear. John Watson, of Britain, j wafr sixth in a McLaren and
a newcomer, Thierry Boutsen, of Belgium, seventh in an Arrow. The Detroit Grand Prix winner, Michele Alboreto, of Italy, came eighth in his Tyrrell and his American team-mate, Danny Sullivan, was ninth. A West German, Manfred Winkelhock, finished tenth in his ATS. Only 11 of the 26 starters were classified as finishers.
