Another plea made to doctors on legibility

PA Wellington The Health Department has made another plea to doctors to improve handwriting on prescriptions. The director of clinical services, Dr John Phillips, said that illegible prescriptions were potentially very dangerous. The wrong medication could be supplied. In a letter to doctors, the department has produced nine examples of prescriptions where the doctor’s instructions were impossible to read. Dr Phillips said names of some drugs were similar and mistakes could be .easily made in filling the prescription. Mistakes had been made in the past and in one instance, a number of years ago, it had led to the death of a patient, he said.
